GalleryHanding your phone to a friend, a child or a coworker shouldn’t mean handing over every photo you’ve ever taken. Here are the practical ways to hide photos and videos on Android, and how to choose between them.
Why “hiding” a photo in a normal folder isn’t enough
Renaming a folder or adding a .nomedia file can keep photos out of some galleries, but anyone with a file manager can still find them. For real privacy you want a lock (a PIN, pattern or fingerprint) between your hidden files and the next person who picks up your phone.
Method 1: Use a private vault inside your gallery app
The simplest option is a gallery app with a built-in private vault. In Gallery Photo Album:
- Long-press a photo or video and select the ones you want to protect.
- Choose Move to Private.
- Create a PIN and a security question. Turn on fingerprint unlock if you like.
- Open Tools → Private files whenever you need your hidden media.
Hidden items no longer appear in the main gallery, timeline or search.
Important: media in a private vault lives inside the app’s storage. Uninstalling the app deletes it, so move items back out (Unhide) before you uninstall or switch phones.
Method 2: Lock the whole gallery app
If you’d rather keep your normal albums but stop others opening the app, enable App Lock in Settings and protect it with a PIN or biometrics. This is a good companion to the vault: even the visible albums stay private.
Method 3: Use your phone’s built-in secure folder
Some Android phones include a secure or locked folder (for example Google Files’ Safe folder or a manufacturer’s secure folder). It works similarly, but features and names vary by brand and Android version.
Tips to keep hidden photos safe
- Pick a PIN that isn’t your birth year or phone unlock code.
- Write down the security-question answer somewhere safe. It’s your recovery route.
- Back up important hidden files before changing phones.
- Don’t share screenshots of your vault screen.
